Buying a property in cottage country could be your dream come true. Moving to a new area can pose a lot of questions, though, particularly around healthcare and your ability to access necessary medical services. When you move from Toronto, Hamilton or another more populous city, will you still have access to doctors, emergency services, and home support in Grey and Bruce counties?

Absolutely! In this post, you’ll find links and information to help you prepare for your healthcare needs as you plan your move to Owen Sound, Tobermory, Southampton or the surrounding areas.

This part of cottage country is served by a network of hospitals called Grey Bruce Health Services. When you move to the area, you will want to make sure you know where the nearest hospital and emergency room are located—just in case!

The GBHS network has hospitals in Owen Sound (head office), Lion’s Head, Markdale, Meaford, Southampton, and Wiarton. Click here to find the phone number and map location of each one.

In case of a health emergency in Grey & Bruce:

For a mental health crisis or emergency, call the Mental Health Crisis Line of Grey Bruce at 1-877-470-5200. This service is provided by the Canadian Mental Health Association Grey Bruce. The crisis line is staffed by volunteers who help people in distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year.

Our local health unit provides a variety of services and programs for residents of all ages including (but not limited to) immunization and screening for communicable diseases, dental health, food safety, health education programs, a sexual health clinic, and public health standards enforcement.

Coordinated care planning can help meet your unique needs, particularly where multiple services or providers are involved.

Home & Community Support Services of Grey Bruce

HCSS Grey Bruce manages and delivers Ministry of Health-approved community support services to eligible adults who reside within Grey and Bruce counties.

Wheelchair Accessible Charter Bus Service, Kunkel Bus Lines

Kunkel’s vehicles include a coach bus and school vans equipped with wheelchair lifts, tie-downs, and additional seating for other passengers. These are located in Durham, Hanover, Owen Sound, Walkerton and can be dispatched throughout Grey and Bruce counties.

Mobility Transit Service in the City of Owen Sound

Door-to door-transportation (within city limits) for Owen Sound residents with mobility limitations that restrict their ability to use conventional public transit. This bus is equipped with a wheelchair lift, while regular Owen Sound transit buses are wheelchair accessible.

Midwives Grey Bruce

The REACH Centre in Owen Sound provides educational and recreational day program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Intake and assessment is required to access support services.
